A huge twitter debate started almost instantly after Piers Morgan tweeted his thoughts on Messi and Ronaldo being the two best soccer players of all time.

Nobody disputes the greatness of either player, but everyone had an opinion on the matter.

@piersmorgan fair point. But Ronaldo is the athlete, Messi is the footballer. End of debate

@piersmorgan I have to disagree. Pele is the best ever. Then Messi, eusabio and ronaldo

@piersmorgan I'm good with Messi but cannot side with Ronaldo (dislike of ManU).

Ronaldo is world class. But Messi, well…Messi is simply Messi #fb

@piersmorgan Messi yes. Zizou would be before Ronaldo for me, purely for his technical ability.

@piersmorgan Bullshit! Leo Messi is much better than Ronaldo #Snm

@piersmorgan defo messi best player ever lived and ronaldo not to far behind probably put best bastard them at the mo though

@piersmorgan your right and also if u put Messi in stoke he would do rubbish. On the other hand Ronaldo would probably win them the league

— savva (@sav_the_yiac) April 3, 2012

@piersmorgan Messi maybe, but can't agree with Ronaldo. I'm not nostalgic, but I still believe that Pele was a timeless talent.

— John Egan (@Johnpaulboy121) April 3, 2012

@piersmorgan still think ronaldo is better willing to challenge himself in different leagues messi won't test himself elsewhere
